I had a rather nice conversation with Roger Mann on MM recently. I asked him to critique some of my art nudes. Here is our conversation! What great help he was to me!!
First up, I really love the way you've lit her; she has a perfect body for art nude and I left a tag to tell her so. With this sort of pic a critique is subjective. Technicalities are less important than the general impact of the image but to be honest, I wouldn't change a thing about the way your model is presented. The one aspect I do find distracting is the background. You have an art nude image in a motel setting with the lamp cutting into your model (visually of course). Motel-style shots tend to be more erotic that art nude and the background is part of the pic and therefore acceptable.
I think you ought to do more with this lady. Collaberate professionally and learn together. The other pic I commented on is excellent and is a prime example of setting and model working together in harmony.
Learn from the greats and if you want to produce fine art or non-commercial imagery, don't listen TOO much to the vendors of commercialism. They may know their camera and lighting settings but it's the radical eye of the artist which makes a great picture. Thanks so much that helps me a lot!
Scott says I need to look more at WHAT I'm shooting not what I WANT to shoot. I need to slow down a bit and LOOK really LOOK at what I have in that viewfinder!!
Yeah learn from the greats! I'm doing lots of looking trying to find those who create in my style, thought I'm not totally sure what that is, but more toward the classic art nudes in a setting or location, and figure work. Any suggestions besides Helmut Newton, Edward Weston??
LOL yeah when he first said that to me that was the first though I had there is photography as documentation/commercialization then there is photography as art. To me the lighting and shadow play on her body and her position and pose are PERFECT just what I wanted, just the way I wanted it, but what if anything distracts from that? The comment you had about the lamp cutting her visually is the key here for me, I UNDERSTAND.Helmut of course but also Ellen Von Unwerth and Bill Brandt. David Bailey and Terence Donovan are two notable Brits also.
Your pics with Ariana are heading in that direction already and to me are on a much higher level than your other work. The 'kneeling' pic especially shows great understanding of light and she looks the perfect model. You're lucky to have access to her as a beginner (her I mean) and it would be in both your interests to do more.Groups

Just me.
